I gripe about expenses and the unoriginals enough. So where does one find the affordable and attractive object?One of the best ways to get art virtually free, is through trade. There are plenty of ways to trade, for the shy and for those who love little surprises in the mail (and who doesn't?), artist trading cards are a great way to force yourself to be creative. Sites like Swapbot offer trading partners nationally or internationally. Often you can also sign up through your favorite forums (see some of the swaps of a YouGrowGirl.com ATC on flickr) or start a group among your friends.
Furniture is a little tougher, but I'm still on the quest. Better Living Through Design seems to integrate the reasonably priced good design in their blog. BLTD reminded me to look at the Chiasso site. I haven't looked through their catalog in a while, bu
t they are definitely reasonable, especially the sale section.Since I haven't used bragging rights quite yet, I did score the couch in the living room for free on Freecycle. Cheaper than the thrift store, but you have to wait until one comes along that suits your space. This couch alone inspired the neutral tones of the room. Sure it has worn patches, but give me 2 days alone with it, and I'll have it recovered in a creamy velvet upholstery. The hopeful result? A sofa for me and the man that Jonathan Adler would approve of.
We'll just have to wait and see!
